How do we strive for ACADEMIC Success?
- Principal Matt Nelson and Assistant Principal Janae Powell lead an amazing group of PK-5th teachers in inspiring love of learning & curriculum mastery.
- All day Kindergarten & half day Preschool.
- Achievement Coaches Rachel Ostvig and Sara Leonard supports teachers with curriculum, teaching techniques, classroom management & PBIS.
- Special Education Teachers (Makayla Strate and Allie Turner)
- Brain boosters in Music, Art, Computer, Gym & Library.
- Reading Interventionists to support instruction.
- A welcoming and nurturing front office staff to greet students and parents. (Charlotte Graham, Mary Russell and Callie Owens).
- Speech Pathologist Susan Lundahl who works with students to develop communication skills.
- PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention Supports) which include Dojo points, a school store and student of the month cultivates an environment where students can S.O.A.R. (skills for self-management, ownership, acceptance to build resilience.
- Afterschool programming for extra support and enrichment.

How we encourage YOUTH DEVELOPMENT?
STUDENT LEADERSHIP Opportunities: 4th & 5th grade students can be involved in Student Council, Safety Patrol, Flag Masters & be Playworks Junior Coaches.
PLAYWORKS –Our Gym Brain Booster instructor and Playworks enhances & transforms recess and play time into positive experiences that make the most of every learning opportunity. Students are encouraged to bring out the best in themselves & each other.
ATTENDANCE & BEHAVIOR SUPPORT PROGRAMS: Encourages school attendance. Mentors on positive social and behavior skills.
AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAM— Academic programming mixed with enhancement activities in Arts & Science.
Choose Gang Free – partnership with UPD and Canyons to teach curriculum to 5th grade students.
COPPERVIEW RECREATION CENTER– Affordable activities for children: afterschool programs, school vacation camps, and organized sporting programs.
RUTH VINE TYLER LIBRARY — Local resource for reading & learning, technology & internet, large Spanish collection & kids’ activities. Kids’ Café daily.
PARENT and FAMILY ENGAGEMENT opportunities?
VOLUNTEERING—EME welcomes parent & community volunteers. Register online to volunteer in classes, in the school, on field trips & with events.
PTA (Parent Teacher Association) – A community of parents who join together to plan, organize, volunteer & fundraise activities, events, and teacher supports. PTA sponsors the Fall Carnival, Pastries with Parents, Fun Run, Teacher Appreciation & more. Meetings quarterly. New members welcomed!
SCC (School Community Council) Parents, teachers, community members & administration come together monthly to communicate and collaborate on how school trust funds are best spent to support student education.
FAMILY LEARNING CENTER—An EME classroom for parents! English, computer, financial literacy & parenting classes. Also learn how to participate, understand, and value the Canyons District education system.
SCHOOL EVENTS Back to School Night, PTA Carnival, Parent/Teacher Conferences, Halloween Parade, Turkey Trot, Living Traditions Night, Fun Run & Family Health & Fitness Night
Who provides HEALTH & SOCIAL SERVICES?
SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGIST Justin Heath— Uniquely qualified at our school to support student learning through assessment, testing and implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEP). Our school psychologist works collaboratively with teachers and parents to create safe, healthy & supportive learning environments.
SOCIAL WORKER Valerie Payne – Ms. Payne collaborate with teachers, administrators, and staff to provide social, emotional and behavioral supports and classes to students. She works with teachers to teach the 2nd Step Social Emotional Learning program in the classrooms each week. Master level interns from the School of Social Work at the University of Utah will be working as supports with our SEL team this year.
MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES—Sometimes students and families need tools and strategies to cope with life stressors. Our partnership with outside services provides a school based licensed Clinical Therapist who is able to offer supports to students and families at the school.
SCHOOL NURSE—Essential support in each school. Nurse Amy Clegg works with front office staff to: follow student health plans, train and educate staff & students on health and coordinate vision screenings.
CLINICS – Immunization, Boo to the Flu, Vision & Medical, Dental clinics through partnerships with CNS, CBC, Utah Partners for Health and Big Smiles. Referrals to Health Services.
MOBILE FOOD PANTRY MONTHLY—For East Midvale students. Approximately 20 lbs of food per family provided. Pantry dates are the first Tuesday of each month August through June. Through Utah Food Bank and sponsored by Regence BCBS.
Who are our COMMUNITY PARTNERS?
UNITED WAY of SALT LAKE uw.org Canyons School District partnered with United Way of Salt Lake (UWSL) to support its Collaborative Community Model for School Improvement at Copperview, East Midvale, Midvale, Midvalley, Sandy Elementary, Midvale, Union, Mt. Jordan Middles & Hillcrest High. UWSL works to connect the greater community with schools to support students and families. Celebrating over 30 years of volunteer engagement, the Year of Action events include Stuff the Bus, Day of Caring, and Read Across America Day.

BACKPACKS – Stuffed with school supplies, these are available to every student enrolled. Provided by UWSL’s Stuff the Bus.
FIVE12 Weekly Food Bag – Given on Fridays for students in need of food resources over the weekend. Requires enrollment.
OPERATION SCHOOL BELL – Provides new school clothing & winter jacket to students based on need. Donated by Assistance League of Salt Lake
WARM THE SOLES – Provides new pair of shoes for students based on need. Resource provided by Jordan Credit Union program.
Holiday Supports – Available through community donors. Vivint Gives Back recipient school.
COMMUNITY SCHOOL FACILITATOR
The partnership with Canyons and UWSL created this CSF position within each Community school. The role is to make sure the 5 pathways align to support academic outcomes, to communicate within the community and to coordinate resources to meet needs. The EAGLE’s NEST CAFETERIA—Each day, all students receive free BREAKFAST and LUNCH at East Midvale! Healthy SNACKS are delivered twice a week to classes. The free “Nutrislice” app is available for school menus and nutritional info. Gluten free meals are available from district Nutrition website or the main office. Completed medical form needed. COMMUNITY GARDEN—At the heart of our school is a lovely open air space with a small vegetable garden. The dream of this space is to offer another learning environment for our students where they can get their hands dirty and participate in the science of growing plants. Volunteers are always welcome to nurture this place!
