Parent Update Week of May 12-16, 2025

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!  May all the mothers, grandmothers and mother figures in our community feel appreciated for all that they do to raise and support their families.

THANK YOU for showering our teachers with appreciation last week!  You and your students made it an extra special week.

CONGRATULATIONS to 4th grader Joseph Matias.  In February he was the winner of the NAWIC block building contest at East Midvale. His excavator design and build went on to the NAWIC southwest regional contest which included 4 states in the southwest US.  Joseph placed second!   Representative Patty Waldhouse from NAWIC along with the judges awarded Joseph his 2nd place award and prize on Friday in front of his class!  We are so proud of this Eagle.

FRESH PRODUCE MARKET!  A bag of fresh produce (spinach, Roma tomatoes, cucumbers, potatoes, bananas and strawberries) is available to families at no cost.  Distribution to parents will start at 2:30 pm in front of the school.  Limited quantities and first come first served.  Please be prepared to tell us how many children and how many adults are in your household.

ACADEINCE TESTING THIS WEEK!  This week all grades, all students, will take the Acadeince tests on Wednesday and Thursday.  Parents – please help your student prepare and be ready to do their best with these tips:

  • Encourage a good night’s sleep before a test and have them eat properly the day of a test.
  • Make the morning of the test as relaxed and pleasant as possible.
  • Strive for great attendance over the next month with on time arrival at school.  Children generally perform better when taking tests in their groups rather than at a make-up time.
  • Wish your child good luck each morning of the test. Tell your child that you believe in him/her!

FAMILY APPRECIATION NIGHT MAY 21– Save the date and we hope to see you there!  There will be food and fun and activities for the summer.  Each family will be given math and reading games that are quick to learn and easy to play to keep students learning over the summer and to limit summer learning loss!.

SUMMER EBT:  Utah SUN Bucks (also called Summer EBT) provide funds to buy food during the summer when schools are closed.  Families can get $120 on a SNAP benefits card for each eligible school aged child.  If you receive SNAP, TANF or Medicaid, and/or you qualify for free or reduced school lunch, your school-age children will automatically be enrolled, and SUN Bucks will be added to your SNAP account or issued as a separate electronic benefit transfer (EBT) card this summer.  If you attend a school where everyone receives free lunch (this is the case for East Midvale Elementary!) and you do NOT receive SNAP, TANF or Medicaid, you can apply for SUN Bucks here. Applications must be submitted by August 31, 2025.  For more information, please click on this link: https://jobs.utah.gov/customereducation/services/sebt/

UTAH STATE CHILDREN’S HEALTH INSURANCE PROGRAM (CHIP):  Enrollment for this program opened on May 1.  It is through the state of Utah and is a health insurance plan for children who are not currently covered by health insurance, who are not eligible for Medicaid or regular CHIP, and who meet income requirements. It covers a variety of medical, dental, and vision services for children. Families can apply online at chip.utah.gov, call 866-435-7414, or contact our Canyons School District Outreach Services office at 801-826-7272.
