Read Across America Week Recap

From caterpillar to butterfly – a life cycle!  That was the theme of East Midvale’s Read Across America Week.  Monday March 2 is Dr. Suess’ birthday and you would have seen the Cat in the Hat serving eggs and ham in the cafeteria!  You also would have seen the beginnings of our Read -a-Pillar creeping along the walls, growing with each segment added with a student recommendation of their favorite book.  On Tuesday, students could do a Big Book Story Walk to read about the life cycle from caterpillar to butterfly.  The pictures were a precursor to the live caterpillars that we will actually watch change from chrysalis into Butterflies in the Pavilion.  On Wednesday, fourth grade classes planted Pugster Butterfly bushes in our community garden with the hopes that butterflies will find food for their journeys.

On a snowy Friday morning, families gathered blankets and books and came early to school to begin the day reading together!  “I spied” Bethany Barton’s book I Am Trying To Love Spiders, A Very Hungry Caterpillar and The Tale of a Butterfly!

Thank you to the PTA for providing yummy donuts.

East Midvale Eagles are Growing into Great Readers!

Also on Friday, through United Way of Salt Lake’s support, volunteers from local CHG celebrated Read Across America Day at East Midvale reading Senorita Mariposa, a bilingual book about the migration of a Monarch butterfly, and creating watercolor butterflies with every class.  Students did a fabulous job and our garden windows are  beautifully adorned. Thank you CHG and UWSL!
