2nd Step Social Emotional Learning Tip of the Week Jan. 25-29, 2021

EMOTION MANAGEMENT is the topic for all grades this week

Ideas being introduced are …

  • When you feel strong feelings, it is hard to think clearly.
  • When you focus attention on your body, it will give you clues about how you’re feeling.
  • When you know how your feeling it helps the thinking part of your brain get back in control.

PARENT TIP:  Notice when your child experiences strong emotions, reinforce their ability to notice what’s going on in their bodies with specific feedback.  For example:

  • Parent might say:  “You seem really frustrated right now. Where do you feel the feeling in your body?”   Child might respond:  “My stomach feels funny, my fists are clenched and I feel my heart pounding”.
  • Model identifying physical clues in your own body that signal strong emotions (Parent might say:  “I am getting angry and can feel my heart beating quickly and my breathing getting faster”)
  • Remind students to do the same.
